Before you rush into emailing us your standard cover letter and CV, you might want to take a quick look at the following…

Advice for Graduates (and in fact anyone interested in applying to us!)

Finding your first job in the world of communications is a daunting experience. Here is a bit of advice from our Head of People on how to make your life a bit easier

Make sure you understand WHO you are applying to

We are inundated with CVs and sometimes gather a pile that we label ‘confused’. If you want to be an Art Director then apply to an Advertising agency. We at MPG plan and buy media across all platforms – we do not actually make ads.

Within the ‘confused’ pile are those that have sent out 100 covering letters to many different agencies. The ones that end up on the confused pile tell us they are very impressed with Mediacom or another agency – attention to detail is key so double check your covering letters before you hit the send button.

Unsolicited letters to nameless faceless people wind us HR boffs up so know your audience and know our names – it makes a difference!

If you get invited for an interview

Make sure you are prepared – From the very basics of planning how to get to our office, to reading the job description and understanding the role and clients involved. There is nothing more off putting than interviewing someone who can’t find the office or hasn’t read the job description.

Dress code – smart or casual? – OK so we are a media agency and most of us wear smart to causal to work but when you are coming in for an interview this is your opportunity to impress us so wear something you feel comfortable in but make it smart. We like it when you dress up!

The Introduction – You’ll probably be met by someone in reception when you come in for an interview so make sure you make eye contact, get the persons name (and remember it!) and give them a firm short handshake remembering to keep eye contact when you do this.

Whatever you do don’t start rustling in your bag, have a coffee in the other hand then faff around like a floundering fish. And speaking of fish whatever you do please make sure your hand shake is firm – there is nothing worse that shaking a limp cold and wet hand. It’s not sexy.

Give examples of things you are proud of – Most interviews will start off with a ‘So why don’t you begin by telling me a little bit about you’…. So grab the bull by the horns and talk about relevant experience you have had or give examples of how your skills are transferable.

Have a point of view – Read up on trade press and make your own mind up on events and current issues. Challenge us on stuff you find out about us and things we have done.

Don’t stare blankly when we ask you what your favourite communication campaign is. And try and make it related to media as opposed to advertising in general. Whilst it is important to appreciate the creative work that goes behind making an advert remember we are a planning and buying agency and we want you to have had a think about smart media campaigns too.
